Vocal Cord Disorders and and Microsurgery Treatment
Hoarseness is the most important presenter of vocal cord disorders. It may be caused by a simple viral infection or it may be a sign of a very serious problem such as vocal cord or laryngeal cancer. With this in mind, hoarseness that lasts longer than 2 weeks should be considered.
The Causes of Hoarseness in Short:
Vocal Cord Infection
Vocal Fold Nodule
Vocal Cord Polyp
Vocal Fold Cyst
Reinke’s Edema of the Vocal Cord
Vocal Cord Cancer
Vocal Cord Paralysis
Vocal fold nodule: is the thickening of the vocal cord caused by poor use of the voice. It can occur in people who speak long and loud with the wrong technique. It is most likely to occur in teachers, vocal artists, and sometimes in children who shout a lot. In treatment, vocal rests and voice therapies are recommended, and if these applications are performed regularly, it can disappear within a few months. If they are large and hard nodules, they can be surgically removed with a microsurgical procedure under the microscope without damaging the vocal cord.
Vocal cord polyp: usually appears as a swelling and mass in one of the vocal cords. Depending on its size and the area where it is located, it causes mild or severe hoarseness. Its treatment is microsurgical removal under a microscope.
Vocal fold cyst results from obstruction of the small mucus-secreting glands in the vocal cords. It causes hoarseness. It may be congenital, caused by poor use of voice or viral infection. It is usually unilateral. Treatment is microsurgical removal under a microscope.
Reinke’s edema: is caused by the accumulation of gel-like fluid under the vocal cord mucosa in smokers. It manifests itself in a deep and rough voice. During treatment, the gel layer under the vocal cord mucosa is removed by surgery under a microscope. After the surgery the patient should stop smoking, otherwise there is a possibility of recurrence.
Vocal cord dysplasia: Color change of the vocal cord mucosa may occur in people who smoke or sometimes under the influence of human papillomavirus. This color change may be white or red color. The first symptom is hoarseness. If such a lesion is detected during examination, it should be surgically removed under the microscope and sent to pathology. This type of lesion is often lesions that may occur in precancerous or early stage cancer. Depending on the results of the pathology, it may be necessary to provide additional surgical treatment to the patient.
