Stenoses in structures such as the nose, soft palate, uvula, and tongue base that form the upper respiratory tract during sleep cause the snoring sound as airflow passes through these areas.
Sleep apnea is when breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer during sleep.
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, however patients with sleep apnea definitely have snoring.
Sleep apnea can also occur due to a problem in the central nervous system.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious problems such as heart problems, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, deterioration of sleep quality, and even death in sleep. It can cause problems at work and social life because sleeping around during the day.
It is usually observed in children due to tonsillar hypertrophy and adenoids. In adults, it can occur in pathologies such as obesity, nasal or pharyngeal problems that obstruct the airway, or congenital jaw anomalies.
To get a definitive diagnosis, patients must undergo a sleep study (polysomnography). As a result of this test, snoring and/or sleep apnea is diagnosed and, if any, a classification of apnea (mild, moderate, severe) is made.
Weight loss is a priority in treatment. If symptoms persist despite weight loss, attempts are made to resolve the problem of snoring and/or sleep apnea with surgical techniques planned according to the anatomical obstructions in the nose, soft palate, tongue base, and pharynx. Devices that deliver compressed air during sleep, called CPAP or BPAP devices, are recommended for people for whom surgical treatment is not an option or who suffer from severe apnea.
